2009-08-25 17:30:00

/Bangalore, Aug 25 (IANS) India Tuesday reported 2 swineflu deaths with a 44-year-old woman in the national capital and a 28-year-old man in Bangalore succumbing to the H1N1 influenza, taking the total toll to 66.

In New Delhi, Usha Jain, a resident of Faridabad, died at 10.15 a.m. Tuesday, said N.K. Chaturvedi, the medical superintendent of the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

'She had three cardiac arrests yesterday and finally died this morning,' he said.

She was the third victim of swine flu death in the national capital.

The 44-year-old woman had not been keeping well for the past one week and was admitted to a private hospital in Faridabad where she was put on a ventilator.

'As she had swine flu like symptoms, her condition continued to deteriorate. She was then shifted from the Faridabad hospital to our hospital on Friday,' Chaturvedi told IANS.

Jain, who was on a ventilator, was shifted to the H1N1 ward of the hospital.

'She continued to be in a serious condition and was on the ventilator. She had fever, breathlessness, cold and cough,' he added.

Her samples were sent for testing and on Monday it was confirmed that she was infected with the H1N1 virus.

Ten people are undergoing treatment for the flu in the hospital and none of them are in a serious condition, he added.

In Bangalore, authorities confirmed that a 28-year-old man, who had died at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) Sunday, had contracted swine flu.

A resident of Cholanayakanahalli village on the city's outskirts, Siddaraju also tested positive for chikungunya, RGICD director Shashidhar Buggi told IANS.

With his death, the swine flu death in Karnataka has gone up to 15.

Karnataka had registered its first swine flu death Aug 12. Within a fortnight, the state saw 15 deaths.

Nine new swine flu cases were reported in Karnataka Monday. Eight of these were from Bangalore and one from Shimoga.

Twenty-seven people in Bangalore, five in Belgaum, one each in Mysore and Shimoga and two in Mangalore are undergoing treatment for swine flu virus.

With the two deaths, the total death toll has jumped to 66 in the country. On Monday, the country reported 137 fresh swine flu positive cases, pushing the total number of infected people to 2,909.
